Free Motion Embroidery

Your regular sewing machine
can make art.
Let me show you how.

Draw with thread. On the machine you already own.

You don't need a special machine.
You don't need special talent.

Embroidery work Embroidery detail Machine embroidery

If you've ever watched someone embroider on a sewing machine and thought "there's no way I could do that", this is for you.

Most people assume you need a fancy embroidery machine, years of practice, or some kind of artistic gift. I thought so too, until I figured out that my regular sewing machine could do it all. And once I figured it out I couldn't stop.

That's exactly what I want to show you.

Nobody Ever Showed You The Right Way

Here's what usually happens. You see a beautiful piece of machine embroidery online. You get excited. You try it. The fabric bunches up, the thread breaks, the stitches are all over the place. You think "I'm just not talented enough for this" and you put it away.

Or maybe you never even tried because you assumed your machine couldn't do it.

I hear this all the time. "I thought you needed a special machine." "I tried once and it was a disaster." "It looks so hard when I watch you do it."

None of that is your fault.

Free motion embroidery is not about talent. It's about knowing a few tricks to get started and how to troubleshoot when things go wrong. The rest you figure out naturally as you go.

Your way of holding the hoop. Your way of listening to the machine. Your instinct for which fabric to use. That's what nobody teaches you. And that's exactly what this club does.

I Figured Most Of This Out By Breaking Things.

I started around 2007, stitching simple line drawings on thrifted shirts and selling them. Those shirts sold like hot cakes so I kept going, kept learning, kept experimenting.

Then in 2020 I discovered the zigzag techniques that mimic hand embroidery and got completely addicted. I started embroidering my own colorful drawings on clothing and those pieces sell out every time.

I'm not a formally trained artist. I figured most of this out by doing it, breaking things, fixing them and doing it again. And I think that's why my students say I'm a good teacher. I know exactly where you'll get stuck because I got stuck there too.

Today I share my work on social media to millions of people who had no idea their sewing machine could do this. Very often the comments are the same: "I didn't know this was possible."

Yes. You can. And I'll show you how.

01

Tools & Materials

We start simple. I'll show you exactly what you need, what your machine needs, and how to set everything up so you're ready to go.

02

Setting Up the Machine

This is the part nobody explains properly. Feed dogs, the darning foot, how different machines handle free motion, because yes this works on your machine.

03

Sketching with the Needle

Prepare your fabric, transfer a pattern, and start moving the hoop. By the end of this module you'll already be embroidering.

04

Straight and Zigzag

Granite stitch, zigzag fills, combining stitches. This is the heart of the course where your work starts looking like real art.

05

Draw with Quilting

Did you know you can draw and doodle through quilting? This module opens up a whole new way to use your machine.

06

Appliqué

Six techniques, raw appliqué, freezer paper, lining, knit fabric and reverse appliqué. More ways to create than you ever imagined.

You Will Learn To Embroider On Your Sewing Machine. For Real.

You will understand your setup, you will know your stitches, you will know how to fix things when they go wrong. You will look at a design and know how to make it.

But honestly the biggest thing is what it gives you beyond the skill.

People in this community are retired teachers finally doing something just for themselves. Hand embroiderers whose hands are getting tired. Artists from other mediums discovering a whole new way to create. People going through hard times who sit down at their machine and feel better.

The sound of the machine. The rhythm of the hoop. The thing you make at the end. It's addictive in the best way.

"I absolute love Vania's encouraging teaching style as well as her ideas. And the fact that she uses mostly thrifted clothing and fabrics as part of her designs was right up my alley."

"As a creative, I can get bogged down with perfectionism. When I fall into that rabbit hole, I hear Vania telling me to get it going and that imperfections are beautiful too."

Questions

Will this work on my machine?

Yes. This technique works on any sewing machine that does simple straight and zigzag stitches, Singer, Brother, Janome, old, new, basic. If it makes stitches it will work.

Do I need to know how to draw?

Nope. I can't draw a straight line freehand either. That's kind of the whole point.

Do I need special supplies or attachments?

You need your machine, a hoop, thread and some fabric. Some people like to use a darning foot and a stabilizer when starting out and I cover both in the course. But you don't need to buy anything before you begin.

Is this for beginners?

If you know how to turn your machine on and make stitches you're ready. We start from the very beginning.

I tried free motion before and it was a disaster. Will this be different?

Yes. Because nobody showed you the right way to set up first. That's exactly where we start.

What if I can't make a live call?

What's the cancellation policy?
